one of the differences between riding in iowa city and des moines

my friend g pickle told me about the latest iowa city tuesday night ride. i asked him to write a story about it, because it's the kind of ride that folks in des moines are afraid to try, while i think we should...
"This week the college green A rides switched to gravel. Tuesday was a fairly tame romp around but Thursday saw a different sort of energy. It had rained proper in the morning and things were wet. Huh???? Did you forget about the "Cup O'Dirt" and how a good portion of the participants are from the Des Moines area? We've found the joy of gravel since January.

I think that it's something that most of the road racers don't want to try until it gets closer to cross season. I've been digging the gravel all year, albeit on a mountain bike. The few cars that you do see slow down, give you plenty of room, along with a friendly wave.

Missed the Tuesday night intent, although the anal part is what has kept me away (lack of legs also contributes).
Is it true that one of the sprints is a stop sign? If so, how do you sprint for it and yet stop as required?

Griz,

Stop? :)

"stop ahead" sign, Griz. Some people ride simply for "the ride" and some people ride for "the cup o'dirt." Therein lies the difference. Thanks for sharing Rev. G-pickle could provide commentary similar to that for most Tuesday and Thursday group rides. Good stuff.
